March 2014: Guide vanes aerodynamic loading and vibrations

Throughout the past 6 months the Pico team had been joined by a mechanical engineering Masters student Mario Vieria from IST University. A number of years ago the generator side turbine guide vanes where damaged by fracturing of the metal vane plates. The causes was believed to be a result of aerodynamic loading from flow separation over the turbine blades associated with the well-known wells turbine stall effect. His thesis was an investigation on the reason for the failure and the old guide vanes.

After Mario had completed testing the temporarily repaired guide vanes were removed and Production was commenced
